I can’t put down this fascinating book by Dr Erica McAlister, senior curator of diptera at the Natural History Museum London.
Who Likes Chocolate?
Did you know that the only insect able to pollinate the cocoa tree (Theobroma cacao) is a tiny fly from the family of biting midges? I’ve just discovered that heather is also pollinated by tiny midges. Long before honey bees came on the scene midges pollinated heather from which the Picts brewed ale.
Easy to Read Style.
This book is amusing and informative, and the photography is superb. If you shudder at the thought of some flies, this book will show you just how important to us they all actually are. I’ll bet you will think of them in a new light after reading this well written book. And, maybe you will open a window and let them out of the kitchen instead of swatting them.

Well done Ann you are really getting the message out about flies. I have always found them fascinating and quite endearing. They always seem to be on a mission. i know they can be annoying at times but so are so many other things in life. All hail the fly!!
I’m glad that you agree, Susan. I made some organic liquid plant fertiliser using comfrey which really stinks and has attracted lots of flies to the sweet box plant by the doorstep. Instead of feeling embarrassed, I am excited by the cloud of bluebottles that rises up to greet me when I reach out with my key to open the door. As you say, all hail the fly!
