Beekeeping Holiday in New York (Part 3).

Megan Denver and Beekeeping Colleagues Promote Pollinator Partnership at Hudson Valley Votes Meeting in Woodstock.
Ann and Megan.

Megan invites me to a meeting promoting local community cohesion, and voting in the upcoming elections. As a prominent beekeeper in the area, Megan is asked to promote improvements for bees and pollinators. But, firstly we mix and chat with the folk invited to the buffet before the event. I meet some interesting people and have my first taste of corn bread. Imagining it to be exclusively savoury, I place a piece beside my chicken and am surprised to find it deliciously sweet. I later learn that it can be either sweet or savoury so quite a versatile food.

Concert.

Between speeches, some talented musicians and singers perform. I’m blown away when my all-time favourite piece of music is played live on stage by the composer himself, Jay Ungar, and his wife, Molly Mason. Naturally, I’m reduced to tears (fortunately it’s dark in the theatre) as I always am when I hear Ashokan Farewell. The music was written in the early ’80s to express regret that summer was ending and the music/concert centre at the Ashokan Reservoir was shutting down for the season. I find it hauntingly evocative. Now it has even more meaning for me.

The Ashokan Reservoir.

Reservoir.

The Ashokan reservoir provides clear fresh water for Manhattan, and probably most of New York city. I visit the dam on my way to JFK airport to start my journey home on the KLM night flight to Inverness via Amsterdam.

Part 4 Coming Later: To Include Bear Damage to Hive, and Hive Insulation Research Project.

  1. Thank you Ann for sharing. What a beautiful journey you have taken us on and how positive to hear about a community coming together to support Bee awareness. And how beautiful to hear about the wildlife too.
